Inside Out Nostalgia, 2023
Plaster of Paris, wood
Dimensions: 13” x 13”
This piece was first exhibited at Goldsmiths University in an exhibition titled ‘Play’ , which brought together the cohort of training Art Psychotherapists. It mused on the material that it was made from.
Plaster, an ancient building material used to protect or decorate walls and ceilings. Used alongside stone in the pyramids, it offers a permanence and robustness. I think about the mediums capacity for holding pigment in the old frescos. Felt as fragile and precious, requiring maintenance and care. The objects cast in plaster are both organic and man-made.
Plastic pieces, carried since times of my toy box, memories of daisy chains made in relationship with friends. These casts are held like broken bones, held immobilized while healing takes place. I think of some of them like baby teeth. Plaster can be seen inside out, as both the positive and negatives can be utilised in the work.
