Glass frit

Dimensions: 4” x “ / 5” x 5”

Musing on Olivia Laing’s writing “in search for a common paradise” and learning that occurred for me whilst training to become an Art Psychotherapist. I was struck by the process of Pate De Verre, a French term which translates as ‘glass paste’, which was used in ancient history in Egypt and Rome. The process requires the creation, and ultimate destruction of plaster moulds, and requires the glass to be fired in temperatures 700+ degrees Celsius.

The two pieces embody something relation, in the dyad of the mother-baby relationship, but also the relationships established in my peer group of trainee therapists, particularly those part of ‘EGBS’ a take on Kleinian theory which considers infant fantasies after splitting the object into a good breast and a bad breast, as a defense.
